Understanding Yad Kard
'YAD KARD' -ESSENTIAL REMEMBRANCE - A TEACHING ON SUFI HEART REMEMBRANCE
Welcome, dear seekers. In today's lecture, we turn our attention to a fundamental practice of the Naqshbandi Sufi path, as elucidated by Shaykh Hisham Kabbani. This practice is known as 'Yad Kard', which translates to "heart remembrance." The accompanying image serves as a visual guide to this profound inward journey.
Understanding Yad Kard
Shaykh Kabbani teaches that this practice is not merely a mechanical recitation but a process of profound spiritual transformation. The goal is to move from an external, verbal remembrance to a state where the remembrance is continuous and resides within the heart.
The seeker begins by reciting 'yad kard' on the tongue. This is the starting point, a way to discipline the mind and direct one's focus. However, this is but a preliminary step. The ultimate aim is to reach the state of true contemplation of the heart, where the divine presence is felt internally, beyond words.
The Mechanics of Internal Recitation
The core of the practice involves reciting the phrase of divine unity of" la ilaha ill-Allah" (There is no god but God) through the heart, using a process of negation and affirmation. This is a physical and spiritual exercise:
Negation (la): The seeker begins with the first word, "la" (no). This word is lifted from under the navel, near the energy center associated with the physical self.
The Journey: This "la" then travels upwards through the body, ascending to the brain.
Affirmation (ilaha): Upon reaching the brain, the "la" brings out the next word, "ilaha" (God). This word is the affirmation of divine existence.
Striking the Heart (ill-Allah): From the brain, "ilaha" (God) moves across to the left shoulder, and from there, it is propelled downwards to strike the heart. The full affirmation is completed as the word "ill-Allah" (except God) lands within the heart, which is the true seat of remembrance.
Spiritual Result: When this word hits the heart, its inherent energy and spiritual heat are released. This energy and heat then spread to all parts of the body, purifying and enlivening every fiber of the seeker's being.
Visualizing the Practice

The accompanying illustration is a masterwork of Sufi iconography, detailing this very process within the body of a Naqshbandi Shaykh.
The Shaykh: Seated in a traditional garden, he is in a state of deep contemplation.
The Path of Words: We can clearly see the Arabic labels and golden lines tracing the journey of the sacred phrase:
la near the navel.
A golden line of light ascending to the brain.
Another line leading from the brain to the heart.
ilaha near the brain/head.
ill-Allah within the illuminated heart center.
The Context: The surrounding garden and mosque represent the inner peace and paradise that the seeker can attain through this practice. The Arabic calligraphy "Allah" at the top reinforces the ultimate object of remembrance.
Conclusion
Through consistent and dedicated application of Yad Kard, the seeker internalizes the truth of divine unity. They move from saying "la ilaha ill-Allah" to being "la ilaha ill-Allah." The heart becomes the locus of God's presence, and this presence radiates outwards, transforming every aspect of one's life.
We invite you to reflect on this teaching and to consider how such a practice of heart-centered remembrance can bring you closer to the divine reality.
